1. Could you tell us about your journey into the fashion industry? What inspired you to start Cherries Bridal?
Cherries : I launched Weddings With Cherries in 2018 with the intention of offering a one-stop shop for all things weddings. However, I soon realized that I needed to master each element of my business plan. I decided to start with “Wedding Dresses,” knowing that this would serve as the gateway to expanding into other fashion and wedding industry projects.
2. What inspires your designs? How do you find creative energy to make each dress unique for your clients?
Cherries: At Cherries Bridal, we draw inspiration from a wide variety of sources, including art, fashion trends, and cultural heritage. We frequently look to influential designers and iconic fashion movements from the past while staying attuned to contemporary trends that reflect societal shifts. We are especially inspired by the stories and experiences of the people we design for, aiming to weave their narratives into our creations. Our ultimate goal is to craft timeless pieces that evoke an emotional response while also pushing the limits of style and sustainability.

3. You’ve dressed some of South Africa’s most recognizable faces, do you have a favourite event or person you’ve styled ?
Cherries: One of my most cherished experiences was designing an outfit for Ratile Mabitsela, a reality TV star from the show Mommy Club. Her unique style and bold personality gave me immense creative freedom during the design process. We collaborated closely to create a look that accentuated her individuality while resonating with her audience. The silver dress she wore on a major platform not only showcased her confidence but also highlighted the strong connection between public figures and their fans. This experience was both rewarding and a testament to the impact of thoughtful design.
4.Sometimes, our greatest lessons come from unexpected places. Has there been someone in your journey who taught you something invaluable, even if they weren’t directly in the fashion industry?
Cherries: Yes, I’ve learned that the importance of empathy and understanding in communication can transform relationships and foster collaboration. It’s a reminder that listening and valuing different perspectives leads to richer insights and stronger connections.

5.If you had the opportunity to mentor young, black women entering the fashion industry, what’s one piece of advice or wisdom you’d want to pass on that’s never been said to you?
Cherries:I would encourage them to embrace their unique identities and perspectives, as diversity drives innovation and creativity. I would advise them to stay curious, continuously learn, and be open to adapting in a rapidly changing landscape.Networking and building relationships are crucial, so they should seek mentors, collaborate with others, and support each other. Additionally, resilience is key setbacks are part of the journey, and perseverance will help them achieve their goals. Finally, I’d stress the importance of ethical practices and sustainability in fashion, as their choices can shape the industry’s future.
